Turkish-Armenian linguist and travel writer Sevan Nisanyan has been granted Armenian citizenship.
Nisanyan received his Armenian passport and citizenship papers from Mr. Fadey Charchoghliyan, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia in Athens.
“I take pride in being a member of a peaceful and civilized nation that has withstood the tribulations of history by its labor alone,” Nisanyan said in a Facebook post.
The writer thanked Armenian Prime Minister Minister Nikol Pashinyan and all others who helped him achieve “this great honor.”
Sevan Nisanyan escaped prison and fled Turkey in July 2017.
Nisanyan was jailed on Dec. 2, 2014 for “construction infractions.” He was sentenced to a total of 17 years in a number of cases.
