Moscow hopes Baku will refuse from the policy of denying entry to Russian citizens of Armenian descent, Spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova told a briefing today.
She called attention to the huge number of media publications, including on social media, on the Azerbaijani authorities’ ethnic discriminatory policy towards Russian nationals.
She said at least 16 such cases were registered last year.
“At the same time Russian citizens have been forced to wait at the airport for hours, and have later been forcibly expelled from the country without being notified of official reasons,” the MFA representative said.
“Unfortunately, such cases are becoming a bad and wrong tradition,” she said.
Zakharova added that the facts are a gross violation of the rights of citizens of the Russian Federation and contradict the letter and spirit of Russian-Azerbaijani relations.
According to her, on many occasions the Russian side has called the attention of the Azerbaijani side to the unacceptability of the situation, demanding to end the practice of arrests and deportation, because, she said, “it is incompatible with the friendly relations between the two countries.”
“We have received assurances from the Azerbaijani leadership that the situation will be corrected, and we are looking forward to that,” she said.
