Speaking to reporters today, the head of EU Delegation to Armenia Piotr Switalski said Armenia can count on more if it performs well on its reforms path.
He reminded that EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn also pledged a substantial increase in finical support to Armenia under the so-called umbrella fund
Mr. Switalski said the very fact that Armenia benefitted from the umbrella fund for the first time last year is a political signal.
“The very fact of being part of the umbrella project is more important that the amount received,” he stressed.
The EU envoy further clarified that the funds are being offered to a country in recognition of its progress in terms of political reforms, and the fact that Armenia benefitted from the fund last year is a signal from the European Union.
“This is a signal that the European Union appreciates very highly the progress in democratic and other reforms, including elections in Armenia,” he added.
Piotr Switalski also noted that the current year is very important in terms of determining the amount of future assistance.
“We are now in a very crucial time, because the EU has started working on its multiannual financial framework, which will determine the commitment for the seven years after 2021,” he said.
