Armenia to mark Citizen’s Day to honor the “Velvet Revolution“
2019-03-21 17:21:43

The last Saturday of April will henceforth be celebrated as Citizen’s Day “honoring victory of the non-violent, velvet, revolution in Armenia in April-May 2018.”

The Armenian government okayed the draft at a regular sitting today.

“This should be the day of victory of the people and democracy, not the new government,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashnyan said in a Facebook post.

He added that the day should become a truly national holiday like the revolution itself.

Pashinyan noted that the way the day will be celebrated must be determined through public discussions, including on social media platforms.

Should the day coincide with April 24 (the day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide victims), the celebrations will be moved to the last Sunday of April.
